Marzipannu Castle
[

Majipannu Kyassuru]
In the Bish
jo Senshi S
r
M
n SuperS movie, the Marzipannu Castle is the strangely decorated, flying fortress where Badiane and her cohorts take the children. The writers of the Bish
jo Senshi S
r
M
n SuperS Movie Memorial Album wrote that they thought the Marzipannu Castle looks like a donut or a baumkuchen. (A baumkuchen is a German cake.) Badiane’s chamber is located somewhere deep inside the castle.
The name of the castle may be a
Nutcracker reference. The famous ballet is based on the story
The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by
E.T.A. Hoffman. In that story, the
Marzipan Castle is said to be located in the Land of the Sweets. The term
Marzipan refers to a confection made of ground almonds or almond paste, egg whites, and sugar. It is often molded into decorative shapes. The alternate spelling,
marchpane, is closer to the original form of the word, Arabic
mawthapan, which means
seated king. The exact line of derivation from king to candy is conjectural.
majipan approximates
Marzipan.
Majipannu comes from the usual spelling
majipan. There is an extra
nu at the end.
Majipannu does approximate
massepain (the French form of
Marzipan) because the Japanese approximate
massepain by writing
masupan.
According to the Bish
jo Senshi S
r
M
n SuperS Movie Memorial Album, the Marzipannu Castle is the creation of supervising art director Tadao Kubota and art director Kenichi Tajiri. The name of the castle does not necessarily have to follow the French name motif that Ms. Takeuchi established.
