Tomorrow we'll have translations for the new update to the Official Sailor
Moon Live Action page, but today we've got some non LA news for you. As we wrote about a while back, the
Sailor Moon manga are being re-released with a number of new updates. Ian
Miller, of DIES
GAUDII fame, has written up for us a list of differences between the first
two volumes of the new manga, and the previous version of the tankoubon. Forum member SailorJupiter244,
who also runs a fun site you should take a look at, graciously put together
some scans from the new manga for us.
So lets look at Ian's list of differences:
Well, the books are neat-looking, I think. The kanji for Bishôjo
Senshi, the katakana characters for Sêrâ
Mûn, the "Pretty Guardian," and the "SAILORMOON"
all are printed on the front covers of the two books such that they are
slightly elevated off the paper. That gives the text a three-dimensional feel.
[As seen on the picture to your left.]
Naoko Takeuchi's name appears as "NAOKO TAKEUCHI" on the front
covers. The kanji that are used to write her name also appear.
There are mini covers over the main covers that advertise the upcoming
live-action series. Luckily, that mini covers are removable. The Sailor Moon
live-action actress appears on the mini covers. Sailor Moon winks and holds
the Moon Stick.
Both books contain stickers.
There are stickers for:
1) The planetary sailor soldiers
2) The moon sailor soldiers
3) The cats
4) The "Pretty Soldier SAILORMOON" title
5) Little bunnies.
Most of the stickers are in the "cutie" style that you see on the
official Sailor Moon Web site. Of course, they are colored.
The first volume ("the Moon volume") contains several pages
that are colored:
1) The volume one title page
2) A picture of Usagi that fills up one page
3) The page of the manga in which Ikuko reads the newspaper that mentions
Sailor V
4) The "Act 1: Usagi: SAILORMOON" title page, and 5) the table of
contents page.

COLOR!
Yes, Japanese comics have now reached the status of American comics in
the 1930s. |
There are six acts included in volume one of the new version of
the manga:
Act 1: Usagi: SAILORMOON
Act 2: Ami: SAILORMERCURY
Act 3: Rei: SAILORMARS
Act 4: Masquerade
Act 5: Makoto: SAILORJUPITER
Act 6: Tuxedo Mask.
There are five acts in volume one of the original version:
Act 1: Usagi: SAILORMOON
Act 2: Ami: SAILORMERCURY
Act 3: Rei: SAILORMARS
Act 4: Masquerade
Act 5: Makoto: SAILORJUPITER.
Different fonts were used for the text (Japanese and Roman letters) in the act
titles. Although Endymion's name is written as "ENDYMION," the name
Serenity does not appear at all.
The second volume ("the Mercury volume") also contains several
pages that are colored:
1) The volume two title page
2) A picture of the five girls (Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako) that
fills up one page
3) The "Act 7: Mamoru Chiba: Tuxedo Mask" title page
4) The table of contents page.
There are five acts included in volume two of the new version of
the manga:
Act 7: Mamoru Chiba: Tuxedo Mask
Act 8: Minako: SAILOR V
Act 9: Serenity Princess
Act 10: Moon
Act 11: Reunion Endymion.

Creepy-eyes
Mercury wants to give you a hug! |
There are four acts in volume two of the original version:
Act 6: Tuxedo Mask
Act 7: Mamoru Chiba: Tuxedo Mask
Act 8: Minako: SAILOR V
Act 9: Serenity Princess
Some of the dialogue has been changed. In the original version of act nine
of the manga, two people mention the phrase yon
shugo jin no senshi, which means soldiers
of the four guardian deities. That phrase was replaced in the new
version of the manga with the kanji for shugo
senshi, which means guardian soldier[s].
(In the second instance, -tachi was
also added.) The furigana over the kanji approximate the word guardians.
So, it looks like the guardians of Princess Serenity are called the Guardians
in the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon
manga. (Many English-speaking fans casually refer to those four soldiers as
the "Inner Senshi" even though they do not have to represent inner
planets.) In the new version, Queen Serenity talks about the Moon Castle's
"Eternal Main System." In the original version, she calls it the
"Main Computer."
There is another significant change. In the new and old versions of the
manga, the girls go to the moon and they see Queen Serenity there. In the old
version, the girls find a sword stuck in a hole in the ground. Queen Serenity
appears there after the sword is removed. However, in the new version of the
manga, the sword is stuck inside a stone dais. Queen Serenity appears on it
when the sword is removed.
So a huge thanks to Ian Miller for the descriptions and to SailorJupiter244
for the scans. She made a number of scans available and we've got them for you
if you look around for the link in the forums.
