Update - Jay Navok

Live Action Sailor Moon update (Naoko update, Interviews)

"In the name of the moon, I'll pin the tail on that donkey! And I don't even need a blindfold because I have no eyes."

Thanks to Arashi for the heads up. There has been a rare update to the Naoko section of the Official Sailor Moon page. Alex Glover usually does these translations but I figured I'd give him a break. In addition to the brief update from Naoko there are several interviews conducted by her with the staff of the upcoming live action show. I have one of the interviews completed for you tonight. As always, I don't mind if you quote this places, just say where its from.

"Hello, this is Princess Naoko. My apologies for not updating in a while (Really sorry.) If you've been wondering what I've been doing its been working entirely on the amendments to the Sailor Moon comics, facing my drawing stand and my Mac, the whooooooooole time. Have you seen the "Sailor Moon Renewal" comics that were released on September 22nd? Your princess [she means her] did the logo design, the cover design... all of it! I think it came out pretty cute (especially the stickers!) So please look for it in the bookstores. (And, uh, buy it. [laughs]) Next up, its almost time for the 10/4 broadcast date of the Sailor Moon live action series. The highlights of the first episode: a cool opening, Sailor V wins acclaim, a 'violent' Nobusato (Nobusato-kun is Princess Naoko's Chief's daughter's oldest son! Do your best, Takeku-kun!"), the pink desks in the classrooms, the incredible CGI youma, and the glittering Sailor Moon henshin sequence! Also, a Luna, whom will surprise you. (And be sure to check for the episode 2 preview. Is Ami-chan a youma??)

Last month I was able to interview the main actresses, the supervisor, and the producers! So lets look at some of them!"

Simultaneous interview with: Sawai Miyu, Hama Chisaki, Kitagawa Keiko

Q1. What melodies do you have on your cell phones?

Sawai: Moonlight Densetsu!
Hama: Arriving calls are just a regular beep, but arriving mail is Moonlight Densetsu
Kitagawa: Moonlight Densetsu

[Did they keep Moonlight Densetsu for the opening then?]

Q2. What are your on set nicknames?

Sawai: Usako, Miyu, Miyu-chan
Hama: Chisakkii, Ami-chan.
Kitagawa: Keiko-chan, Rei-chan.

Q3. How did it feel like when you were chosen to be in this series?

Sawai: I was so happy! But I was really surprised... for a while I didn't feel confident I'd live up to the role.
Hama: I was really happy. But for a moment, quite nervous.
Kitagawa: I've liked Rei for a long time because her meditative personality is so strong... I was happy to the point of tears, literally.

"No, I shall win this game of pin the tale on the donkey! By reaching out and hugging it!"

Q4. What was it like putting on the Senshi's clothing for the first time.

Sawai: The skirt was so short!! But it was enjoyable and from that point on I was so excited about it.
Hama: "I... I can't walk around in this skirt!"
Kitagawa: I was happy to become that Sailor Mars whom I loved. Plus I looked so well in it, I thought to myself, "I really am the perfect Mars." [I s**t you not, she says this.]

Q5. How do you differ from your characters?

Sawai: Usagi-chan doesn't seem to have much pride in her athletic accomplishments, but I have incredible reflexes! [Uh, okay.]
Hama: Ami-chan is very much like an adult and she excels at academics, while I'm not very academic at all.... leave me alone!
Kitagawa: From all I know about Rei-chan, the two of us are exactly alike. Its a very smooth transition into her role, I can't think of any ways we differ.

*At this point Tuxedo Mask's actor Shibui Jyoji threw in a word. "Miyu-san really is the perfect image of Usagi. Although Hama-san isn't very adult... And Kitagawa-san is just cool all around, she really does feel like Rei-chan."

Q6. What do you think of the filming staff?

[All three answered at the same time] All of them are incredible! They're all gentle and give encouragement, and at times they speak very profound words. The film set is a lot of fun.

Q7. What's fun and difficult when you're filming?

Sawai: Currently the difficult part is: "We're freezing!" Takeuchi-sensei, please draw warmer costume designs!
Hama: Everything's fun! When we're in the middle of filming its fun, when we're having lunch bentos its fun, etc.
Kitagawa: If I don't get accustomed to the Priestess clothing soon its going to become real painful. And I've got to get Rei's facial expressions spot on... If I don't overcome these problems quickly I feel like I'm going to fall apart!

Q8. Tell me what you thought when you first met Takeuchi Naoko.

Sawai: She's as cute as I had thought! She's always smiling and at the auditions she really helped relieve tension.
Hama: She's quite the snappy dresser!
Kitagawa: She's got nice style!

Q9. You've seen the manga and the anime right? What scenes stand out to you?

Sawai: Of course... the scenes I remember the most vividly are when, in the final battle against the Dark kingdom, the senshi are defeated one by one.
Hama: [Credit for the translation on this goes to Kazuhira. Thank you!] I was looking forward to watching the ep.45 46, (saishuukai = the ending of "classic") but today, on the bus way home from the location shoot, Miyuu-chan talked to me meanderingly about the ending of "classic"(ep.45 46).... She spoiled the whole thing! (netabare, neta = the contents of the story bare = barasu, bareru = disclose, expose .....netabare is a kind of slang.)
Kitagawa: Its gotta be Rei-chan! The episode with the disappearing bus, Rei's entrance, that's the one that I like the most.

"Evil donkey, begone!"

Q10. What were your thoughts when you first saw pictures of yourself dressed in the senshi costumes.

Sawai: The wig and the clothing were pretty well matched. I was nervous that, having been accustomed this whole time to the style of the anime, that it wouldn't look right in reality, but it really fit fine!
Hama: I think blue hair is a tad flashy...
Kitagawa: I was a perfect reproduction of Rei-chan- that's the kind of confidence I had. I was gushing with feelings of "I can do this!"

[Yeesh, calm down with the "I am the greatest Rei EVAR" stuff already.]

Q11. So what are you interested in seeing when the program finally airs?

Sawai: I'd like to see the facial expression on Sailor Moon when she transforms. I think its a bit different from the previous transformations, but its still cool.
(She faulters and runs away.)
("Ami-chan would never run away!" says Hama Chisaki.)
Hama: I'm interested in seeing how Ami-chan's feelings will change from the first episode through the last.
Kitagawa: I'm interested in Rei's introduction scene. With the flames blowing about , creating intense heat and sweat, it was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life! So many things were going through my mind, yet I managed to be able to speak my lines.

Q12. Do you think that the 5 senshi will become friends? Who will be the leader?

Sawai: Of course they'll be friends! Since all of us are girls people may think there will be disputes and personality conflicts, but there's nothing like that at all. Although I think afterwards I'm going to want to smack everyone! ("She already does" - Hama Chisaki.)
Hama: Everyone's very friendly. Particularly Usagi-chan (Miyu-chan) who, since the very start of filming, has been with me. She really is like her character.
Kitagawa: We're already great friends! But is the leader really Miyu-chan...? In any case, all of us are holding strong and lending each other strength and confidence.

...By the way, Kitagawa san... is it true that at school you refer to everyone as "Aniki" [older brother]? Why?
Kitagawa: Its true. I've got a very candid personality and since I'm always relying on them, they're all my "older brothers."

Alright. MVP of this interview goes to Kitagawa. You've already got the job, you don't need to sell yourself more. And yet she still does...

By the way, Cindra created some very cool animated gifs from the live action promos. Check her page for them later, but in the meantime you can find them here:
