A Present for Keiko

War is hell and sometimes you do things in it that are just plain dumb.

At least, that was the original intention. Long, long ago, at the start of the forum gender wars, I began a thread suggesting that we men send one of the senshi actresses a present. Given the nature of the gender wars it was to be a very stupid present, as a joke. Among other suggestions, sending her a ball of scotch tape, some Charmin, or a box full of Styrofoam peanuts with a cracker jack toy in it.

I also wanted to have it sent to Alisa (Kuroki Mio) but somehow or another people in the forums decided on Keiko. Unfortunately the "Free Willy" star died in December of 2003 :( Then I realized that they meant Kitagawa Keiko.

With the destination actress chosen, there was just a matter of picking a purpose and finding suckers to send me free stuff-- I mean, recruiting forum members willing to send presents to an actress for a children's television show a half world away.

The purpose was simple- Keiko's 18th birthday is coming up.

The gullible fools generous forum members willing to purchase and send stuff to Keiko were Sejanus and Parvus Imperator. With me, it ended up being three guys sending her a present. Sorry girls, despite the whole 'had a higher post count' thing, I believe this means the Guy's Forum for Guys won.

After discussion we decided on what we'd be sending her. While novels  and similar books were out due to the fact that she probably wouldn't be able to read any English, I ended up getting her The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes. It's comics, it's simple to read, it's funny as hell, and it could be good English practice. Despite that I am certain it will end up being used as a paper weight. But whatever, I couldn't think of anything better to send so she'd better take it and like it.

Sejanus sent a Yankees cap because we know she's got some baseball interest and whenever I watch TV Japan's sports stuff they always talk about the Yankees so sure why not. (I am a Mets fan.)

Parvus sent a wrapped box full of mystery stuff and/or anthrax. (The fact is I don't remember what he said was in the box and am too lazy to go look it up.)

After her diary in regard to her purchasing a car, I thought it'd be interesting to send a keychain. Given how soon the package would be shipped out I decided to send one which I had at home already: a metal "hamesh" keychain. My mom buys a bunch of these whenever she's in Israel. Here's what it is:

The Hamsa Hand (Arabic) or hamesh hand (Hebrew) is an old and still popular amulet for magical protection from the evil eye. The words hamsa and hamesh mean "five" and refer to the digits on the hand. Referred also as hand of Fatima and hand of Miriam. For centuries the Hamsa has been used as a symbol of Good luck and shields its owner from the curse of the evil eye. The Hamsa's positive energy draws happiness, riches and health.

Lastly I picked up a card, and tossed in a Genvid shirt for good measure.

Box before everything else got wrapped up

Scans of the card before I wrote Japanese on it, along with the keychain:

It was the best CVS had to offer

I translated this and added in Japanese that we (three fans from the Genvid Forums) enjoyed her acting and congratulated her on her birthday. While at CVS I also picked up some white paper to wrap the box in. (I didn't want anything flashy to attract the attention of customs.)

And that was it. The address it was sent to was her talent company's official fan letter address. If you can't figure out what part of that page is the address, I don't recommend sending anything as they're not going to be able to read your letter. (If you send something make sure it's in Japanese.)
