E3 and Project News -
Part 2
It was an amazing E3 show this year. I may write up some thoughts on it
tomorrow, with video, for those who are interested. Highlights included meeting
Evel Knievel, Gary Coleman, and "Falcoon" (lead artist for SNK; unfortunately he
had run out of Mai Shiranui posters but I got a signed Fatal Fury hat), saw Tony
Hawk skate live, attended a free Alkaline Trio concert, and more. I also got to
visit Cartoon Network's production house for Robot Chicken and its upcoming show
Moral Orel, read some scripts, saw some RC stuff that's never going to air (for
good reason), and saw Moral Oral's dolls in-production.
Oh, and yeah, the video games. Zelda is really fantastic, a half hour with it
wasn't enough.
NEW PROJECT INFORMATION
I should be receiving the review copy of the book on Monday or Tuesday, and
as soon as it's ready we'll launch the Project. In the meantime, I wanted to
talk to you about what's actually in the book.
We had contemplated for a while how the book should be laid out. Did we want
to go by character? By season? We wanted this book to be accessible to many
people so we needed to choose a way that would make sense to people who may not
even had seen the series before. We opted for a layout organized by topic.
Warriors of Legend starts with an introduction to the book and the
naming schematic we've chosen for the characters (Japanese, western style with
first name first). Next is a primer to the Sailor Moon series, where we
discuss Naoko Takeuchi, her troubles making the series, and summarize the major
events of the manga and anime that will be brought up in the book. Even if
you know the series like the back of your hand, and if you're a regular here you
likely do, we recommend reading these chapters. The way we describe the events
of the show in the early chapters are a set up for how we're going to be
interpreting them later, so this way you'll know where we're coming from,
perhaps gaining a new perspective on Sailor Moon and Naoko Takeuchi in
the process.
We quickly move into the book's two major parts. The first, entitled
Exploring the Sailor Moon Universe, is one we think many Sailor Moon
fans will be fascinated with, and enjoy a great deal. We're going to take you
into the history of the city of Tokyo, and the area of Tokyo called Minato ward
(the "borough" in which the sailor soldiers live), looking at just how much
Sailor Moon reflected the real Tokyo of the 1990s by visiting the actual
shrines, schools, parks, and many more places that the sailor soldiers worked,
studied, and played at.
Part two of Warriors of Legend is split into five chapters: Family,
Culture/Lifestyle, Education, Religion, and Foreign Influences. Each consists of
an introduction explaining aspects of Japan as seen in the Sailor Moon
series, and then a series of essays on one or more of the characters that
are related to that subject. So, for example, much of the religion chapter is
seen through the prism of Rei.
The book's conclusion will also be of great interest to you. We're going to
lift the veil on what happened when the finale of the Sailor Moon anime's
first season (where all the sailor soldiers are brutally murdered) aired.
I hope we've whet your appetite for this book just a bit. Hold tight,
Warriors of Legend is almost here.
