Note
to new girl: don't accept French bread from strangers.
You never know which trampoline she was jumping on with them. |
The Act 17 preview went up plenty early at the official
Live Action Sailor Moon page. None of the diaries for the week (nor
Jupiter's from last week) have been updated though.
The Dark Kingdom has been able to amass large amounts of the life power of
humans- that is, "Energy." The enemy is indeed becoming strong. But the only thing in Usagi's head is
Mamoru as she bumped into Mamoru when he was with another girl...
Aware that Usagi's behavior has become strange, Ami and Makoto are cautious and concerned; they refuse to
take their eyes off her. At the same time, having come for the anniversary of her mother's death, Rei saves a weakened dog in a church. And who should she happen to see in there but Aino Minako!
There's an issue that surfaces in Japanese religious studies called
"syncretism." When a scholar discusses this term in context of Japan
he's usually referring to the amalgamation of Buddhism and Shintoism in the
mind of most Japanese laymen. However, for our purposes this may be applied to
Christianity as well. The trio of religions (which are the most widespread in
Japan insofar as parishes and buildings) are seen somewhat ambiguously.
Scholars tend to agree that strong
distinctions between religions (and 'religiousity') are not part of the
Japanese cultural tradition, nor is strict adherence to any religious faith or
dogma. This is not to say that the country's citizens lack religious
grounding, nor that there are not devout Japanese Christians, only that
defined notions of one religious faith being a chosen path which one must
adhere to is not part of the equation for the majority of citizens. (Despite
the fact that it's important to both Christianity and Buddhism
institutionally.)
The fact that Minako is in a church and finds herself praying there does
not mean she is a Christian; given her reasons for coming there it
seems she's accepted a common viewpoint of a Church, like a Temple,
as a general 'holy place' where one can find solace.

I'm
pretty sure I saw this enemy in a Zelda game too. |
To give you a more pertinent example, the director of the Sailor Moon S
anime season, Kuniku Ikuhara, made the following remark in regard to the
"Crucifixion" scene of Sailor Neptune in the animated series:
"[Neptune] looked good crucified, so we crucified her. Christ is an
object of religious fantasy in Japan, so that is how it was used. He is just
another character in fantasy to us. Even if references to crucifixion were
made in Sailor Moon, it was not as
part of an attempt to communicate a religious message."
As for why Rei is there, that I'm not going to speculate on.
The Toei
page has the following bit up:
"Oh, I see. He has a girlfriend..."
Having seen Chiba Mamoru together with another girl Usagi desperately begins telling herself, "The one I love is Tuxedo Kamen!" Meanwhile, at a church, Rei unexpectedly encounters the idol Aino Minako!
There's an interesting picture there of some of the girls with a cake. The
text next to it says that the show has a new supervisor, a Mr. Satou.
New TGTN below! Be sure to check it out!!
